Wittgenstein in particular marks a character who I’d love to see pursued in his own book—even though Wittgenstein inhabits a fair percentage of Russell’s book, I was thirsty for more. Fortunately for him, Russell pulled back from the abyss before it could swallow him whole, and became one of the early 20th century’s greatest philosophers in the process. Logicomix An Epic Search for Truthcame as a complete surprise to me.

The book is highly readable, and enjoyable. We feel Russell’s pain rpic he and his partner, Whitehead, struggle for years to find their solution. It is a novel, largely based on facts. Which is probably the same thing! At its heart, Logicomix is a story about the conflict between pure reason and the persistent flaws of reality, a narrative populated by great and august thinkers, young lovers, ghosts and insanity.

A fantastic read in all, remarkable for its dexterity and character portraits or at times suppositions, rather as it shifts back and forth through a live history surrounding the ‘foundational quest’. I especially enjoyed the recurring and illuminating scenes epi Aeschylus’s Oresteia by way of the aforementioned drama rehearsal and how Wittgenstein’s experiences in the war were portrayed. The authors — as they themselves explain — are very concerned to make sure that this is a story about these mathematicians’ and philosophers’ private lives as well as truuth professional investigations.
