I had promised myself never to touch a Jelinek again after suffering through three of her novels for a Nobel Laureate reading project.

This novel is so depressing. Lawrence, and a lot about this story reminds me of a turn-of-the-century British novel in its exploration of social and sexual themes. Most notable, the commentary on women.
