I would recommend this book to those who would like a short, fairly accessible though I would still recommend a background in philosophy survey of the history of philosophical hermeneutics. Because he is the first to pay close attention to pre-Romantic figures, Grondin is able to show that the history of hermeneutics cannot be viewed as a gradual, steady progression in the direction of complete universalization.
Although Grondin is pretty much partisan to Gadamer’s hermeneutics no wonder he was willing to write the forewordthis book still gives a good and instructive overview of the field. I think the title was a bit misleading: He was born and educated in Marburg, Germany, where he studied under Martin Heidegger. The index is inadequate—especially for a quasi-textbook.
