This was a very sweet book that would be a good introduction for children to the horrors of World War II. Jan’s main effort though is to conserve his so-called ‘treasures’ which he keeps in his little wooden box, including the special heirloom of the children’s the iconic silver sword of their father.

A quick and easy read. Little House Yes, this is a great book for children. His best known work, The Silver Swordwas published in and has become a classic, bringing to life the story of four refugee children.
My granddaughter aged 12 brought this book home from school. You could feel what the characters are feeling. I have no criticism and looked forward to reading it at night.

I know I definitely would have enjoyed it as a chil I added this apparently well-beloved children’s classic to my to-read list because it was recommended by one of my internet friends, Amy. As a war text, it’s not the most informative, but as a story about what it was like to be a child and survive, it’s a veritable source of accuracy.
