A great book for the serious student of kanji or any curious person. It reads like a best-seller. There is a story to each kanji–and when you know the story it is much ea This is a reference book, so I have not read it cover to cover, but I use it every single day, and have done for almost a year now.

To sum up, this book is a superb study of kanji, meticulously researched, concisely explained, and elegantly presented. I personally used it extensively for inspiration when creating my own stories, but in its own right it can be tremendously useful for remembering the kanji.

There is a story to each kanji–and when you know the story it is much easier to remember each kanji. If mnemonics help you with retention then fine, but retention is not all there is to fluency, and you’re never going to be fluent if you have to recall some goofy story that actually has nothing to do with the kanji at hand every time you encounter it. However, in many cases, this wasn’t feasible and I ended up with a story totally unrelated the history of the kanji.

This is the most amazing kanji book I have found so far. Through my career of researching and teaching Japanese, this is the best all round Kanji book I have seen so far.

Log in or sign up in seconds. Heisig probably works better for mnemonic purposes, but frankly, mnemonics are a terrible way to learn kanji in general. And there are around 2, of them! And that makes this book more special to me.

My biggest issue kanni this hebshall that learning kanji with no vocabulary context is utterly useless. Is it reasonable to love a reference text like I love Henshall? It is perfectly balanced and allows the user to search for characters via the “sound readings” or via the stroke count index. I could get lost for hours reading the history behind each character.

This book is supposed to teach you to remember the Henshwll with mnemonics and explanations of the character’s etymology. I hope I will finish your book one day! There is a further complication, even if you subscribe to the kanui of limiting yourself to the mnemonics and a brief check of the explanation. This is information overload — it provides no assistance in memorizing the current hensha,l, although it is an interesting detour. Just be cognizant of your goals when perusing this book henxhall that is, you probably want to learn kanji as opposed to the history of kanji– and orient your study accordingly.
