About the shots and multiple sword-thrusts, and the way Don Carlo couldn’t convince himself the job was done until he had cut his victims to ribbons, and he had personally skewered his wife to the floor. Have one to sell? If any of Gesualdo’s music can persuade the sceptics then it is surely this cycle of 27 Holy Week responsories, a coherent and stylistically convincing sequence of sustained beauty and vehemence.
This pattern continues until the final chant disappears into the darkness: Ecce quomodo moritur justus. Every piece blossoms with the geusaldo force of nature, even as it questions that very nature for having driven a man to such extremes. Solo voices throughout are perhaps more appropriate, as indeed one would expect given the intense, difficult lines.
Nevertheless, it’s the very condition of being weird that guarantees performances to Gesualdo’s Tenebrae Responsories. Responsoria et alia ad Officum Hebdonadae Temebrae.
