After borrowing Genuine Origami from an online library, I knew I would need far longer than 3 weeks to accomplish this book. So I decided I must own a copy. The giraffe which looks almost rudimentary was my most difficult model in the fundamental section.

It has a sink fold, an asymmetrical inside reverse fold, and two tuck folds that are so tiny I needed tweezers. Rather it is to present a model which allows you to focus on one or two specific techniques or principles so you can hone those skills.

If you are familiar with folds like rabbit ear, petal, squash, and sink, you might be ready to give it a try. Maekawa-san refers to Genuine Origami as a textbook. Start from the beginning.

That said, before I started the book, I did fold the rabbit, which is an intermediate model. However, I first tried the rabbit four years ago. After pouring over the diagrams and watching several YouTube tutorial videos, I got as far as the head before I gave up. Recently I decided to give it another go.

After watching more YouTube videos, I was able to fold a decent rabbit. Also even though Maekawa-san indicates using 15 cm paper for the first models, I started with This is an almost flawless origami text. The author knows his subject well and includes references to the history of the techniques he’s teaching.

The symbols used throughout the book are neatly catalogued and explained orivami the beginning of the book, and at the same time methodically “unpacked” as one goes from the simple models at the beginning toward complex at the end.

He shows an understanding and respect for pure forms no cutting, single-color vs. It’s great for any level from beginner to advanced.

A note to beginners: But trust me, Maekawa is perfectly consistent throughout this book so if you stick with it you will get used to his notation and be an expert before you have done even half of the models.

My only gripe might be that at times the English translation is just a tiny bit awkward, but far from enough to deduct a star: I distinctly remember getting a copy of Maekawa’s Viva! Origami in Japanese via interlibrary loan during college, photocopying directions for his “Devil”, and then spending hours folding it instead of studying.

I was immensely pleased to discover that I can now throw away my dog-eared photocopy and replace it with this English version. As another review mentioned, this has clearer diagrams than the original. Additionally, some earlier reviewers said that the photographs were tough to follow, implying these weren’t line drawings.

At least in my copy, all the instructions are standard origami line drawings, finishing occasionally with a picture of the finished product. This book does not, however, reproduce every model found in the original Viva!

Sadly, and notably missing is the Seated Deer. There are a few others, I’m certain, but I don’t have access to the original anymore.

Genuine Origami: 43 Mathematically-Based Models, from Simple to Complex

Entertaining for the intermediate to high intermediate folder, and probably worth it just for English-language instructions for the Devil. One of the masterpieces of the origami literature. This is my number two favorite origami book ever published. This book IMHO is the best book ever published for learning how to fold and appreciate the art of origami design. Unfortunately, the English writing has not been well lined edited. I originally bought this for my son for Christmas a couple of years ago he was 9because he loves origami.

Over the next couple of years, he used the book so much that he wore out the binding, and pages started to fall out.

So I’m buying this replacement for him.

He loves that the book has some very origa,i models, and the models increase in complexity as you proceed through the book — he wants to fold the devil, but he hasn’t quite folded the samurai helmet beetle yet which is the model hy it, and is slightly less difficult.

So his origami skill has skyrocketed because of this book, and it’s given him many mae,awa hours of enjoyment. If I could rate this six stars I would. This is a book about the geometry of origami. The models in the book all look really good, even the simple ones, the complex models look amazing. One person found this helpful. See all 40 reviews.
