As with most middle volumes of any trilogy, it’s somewhat protracted and bridgelike. Komiaga personally enacts all the evils inherent in the political leadership of modern-day Russia, from the big suppressing the media and the opposition to the small calling ahead to a traffic cop on his mobilov to clear one of the notorious Moscow traffic jams so that the powerful can slip through.

Sorokin is an excellent writer, though I recommend you read this Wikipedia entry before reading the novel. It would be wrong to give the impression that this book is gray and grim.

Trivia About Day of the Oprichnik. None other than tge cyberpunks. Yes, there were atrocities but his in comparison to peers he was not all that “terrible. Komyaga is one of the top enforcers in the secret police, and during one day he gets to see a lot of action; he roots out and hangs unwanted elements, he oversees the day’s state-approved dissident poetry and makes sure it’s not too subversive, he flies to Sibiria to consult with soothsayers and make deals with the Chinese, he does very expensive drugs, he philosophizes on the importance of Russianness The very same nobles, often from the very same aristocratic families.

Others less so, like the gang rape of a nobleman’s wife.

Everythin is about stomping out dissension. The Soviet years and the messy capitalist confusion that followed are long over, the decadent junkie cyberpunks in the West have been shut out with a huge wall, the Czar is back in the Kremlin, the sacred Russian church is in charge of moral, and the not-so-secret secret police keep everyone in check.
