I just can’t remember whether it said balrogs have wings or not. This could not be further from the truth. Here is the comprehensive reference guide for the millions of fans of the Hobbit and the Lord Of The Rings trilogy. Packed with full page maps and illustrations of events in the annals of Middle-earth, it is the perfect companion to the bestselling A Dictionary of Tolkien. Illustrated by Lidia Postma. The Tolkien Bestiary
I would bdstiary a reader to use this as a companion piece only as a straight read through is a bit dry and without the central theme of a time period or geographic area to link the subjects, I found myself having to constantly remind myself that things were part of many worlds and not jsut the “here and tolkifn of whatever time period and location from the last entry.
This book is a masterpiece, a truly wonderful depiction of Tolkien’s creations by a group of gifted artists and illustrators, beautifully brought together by David Day.
The second chapter deals with Tolkien and The Hobbit. Paperback edition of A Tolkien Bestiary. Published before as A-Z Tolkien. Easy to read pocket with some info on Tolkien, the books, the movies. Asterisks within articles show other references, allowing readers and students to follow themes that bestiar their interest and discover more on how Tolkien’s life and writing interweave.
